ER5554 Aluminum Welding Wire
ER5554 is an Al-Mg filler wire matched to 5454 base metal. It retains stable mechanical properties and corrosion resistance at sustained service temperatures above 65°C, making it suitable for welding heat-exposed components. Where the base metal is 5454, ER5554 is the matching filler.
ER5554 belongs to the aluminum-magnesium family, with roughly 2.4–3.0% magnesium and minor chromium and manganese additions that refine the grain and stabilize the microstructure. Its defining characteristic is service suitability at elevated sustained temperatures: most high-magnesium fillers such as ER5356 and ER5183 are prone to stress-corrosion sensitization under prolonged heat, whereas ER5554 balances magnesium content against its microalloying elements to reduce this sensitization risk, allowing sustained service above about 65°C. Accordingly, where the base metal is 5454 and the weldment must withstand prolonged temperature rise, ER5554 is the matching filler. TGM keeps this grade in stock, supporting stable supply and replenishment and shortening lead times.

Characteristics & advantages
- Stable at elevated service temperatures: the composition suits sustained service above about 65°C and effectively suppresses the stress-corrosion sensitization common to high-magnesium alloys, maintaining reliability through service life.
- Matched to 5454 base metal: the composition closely matches 5454 base metal, so weld metal and parent remain consistent in strength, ductility and corrosion resistance, giving predictable joint performance.
- Reliable mechanical properties: typical as-welded UTS of about 270 MPa with good ductility, meeting the strength requirements of general structural welding.
- Corrosion resistance: Al-Mg welds offer good resistance in both atmospheric and aqueous environments, suited to long-term service conditions.
- Smooth feeding, good process adaptability: suitable for both TIG and MIG, feeds smoothly by hand or by machine with a stable arc and few feed-jam interruptions, giving good welding operability.
- Consistent batches, stable supply: layer-wound spools pay off smoothly and tangle-free with consistent feeding from spool to spool; kept in stock for replenishment on demand to support production continuity.
Typical applications
- Tanks, pressure vessels and piping subject to temperature rise, particularly parts operating continuously above 65°C.
- Chemical and petrochemical equipment with parts requiring strength, corrosion resistance and temperature tolerance together.
- Tanker bodies and transport-container structures fabricated from 5454 sheet or extrusions.
- General aluminum structural welding that must retain stress-corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures.
Base-metal match
ER5554 is primarily used to weld 5454 Al-Mg base metal and also suits other low-to-medium-magnesium aluminum alloys with elevated-temperature service requirements. If the part operates continuously below 65°C and higher joint strength is required, ER5356 or ER5183 may be used instead.
