ER5356 Aluminum Welding Wire
ER5356 is an Al-Mg aluminum filler with approximately 5% magnesium, and one of the most widely used 5xxx-series fillers. It offers high joint strength, good corrosion resistance and broad welding adaptability, making it a common choice for welding aluminum-magnesium alloys. TGM keeps it in stock across 1.2 / 1.6 / 2.0 mm with reliable lead times.
ER5356 is an Al-Mg (5xxx) filler with roughly 4.5%–5.5% magnesium, achieving higher joint strength than silicon-based fillers through solid-solution strengthening. It is among the most widely used aluminum fillers domestically: its anodized color closely matches most 5xxx and 6xxx base metals, and it provides good corrosion resistance in coastal, humid and salt-laden environments, making it a sound choice as a shop-standard grade.
When higher joint strength and corrosion resistance are required, or the base metal is itself a 5xxx Al-Mg alloy, ER5356 is more suitable than silicon-based fillers such as ER4043. Note that fillers with ~5% Mg are not recommended for parts in continuous service above approximately 65 °C; for such duty, ER5554 is advised. For specific selection, please share the base-metal grade and contact our technical team.

Key characteristics
- High joint strength: with ~5% Mg and solid-solution strengthening, its tensile strength is among the higher levels in the 5xxx family, suiting load-bearing and structural weldments.
- Good corrosion resistance: stable performance in seawater, humid air and salt spray, suiting marine and outdoor structural welding.
- Stable feeding: with moderate column strength and uniform diameter, ER5356 feeds smoothly in both manual and semi-automatic operation, reducing feed disruptions.
- Smooth payoff, consistent batches: the layer-wound spool unwinds evenly for continuous welding, and stable batch-to-batch consistency generally means no re-tuning of parameters when changing spools or lots.
- Matched appearance: post-weld anodized color is close to most 5xxx and 6xxx base metals, keeping welds on visible parts inconspicuous.
- Broad applicability: it welds a range of Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Si base metals, giving wide coverage as a general-purpose aluminum wire worth keeping in stock. If a base-metal grade is uncertain, please contact us to confirm.
Typical applications
- Aluminum welding on boats, yachts and various marine structures
- Rail vehicles, body frames and transport structures
- Pressure vessels, tanks, piping and other load-bearing weldments
- Bridges, guardrails and architectural structural aluminum
- General machinery, tooling and everyday repair welding
Base-metal pairing
ER5356 is suitable for welding Al-Mg alloys such as 5005, 5050, 5052, 5083, 5086, 5154 and 5454, and is also commonly used on Al-Mg-Si base metals such as 6061 and 6063. Where the base metal is higher in magnesium or higher joint strength is required, ER5183 may be selected. For specific pairings, see our selection guide, or share the base-metal grade and our technical team will recommend a match.
